We are in front of  SM Entertainment. First off, SME has produced many of Korea's top stars, and amongst these, of course, are Dong Bang Shin Ki, Tohoshinki.


At the closing of 2009, there have been many Japanese shows with the five of them together, putting the fans at ease for bit. Unfortunately, it is near impossible to see the five together here in Korea.
Yunho and Changmin have stayed in SME while the other three have already started their solo activities in Korea. Last month they attended the MAMA Award Show under the name of Dong Bang Shin Ki and other of their activites have been coming along. Of course, it is present that all five of them are need to show Dong Bang Shin Ki's charm. So today, we have put together videos of Dong Bang Shin Ki that only MNet has for everyone to watch. Please enjoy these to the very end.

First of all, today's guest, who will analyze Dong Bang Shin Ki with me today, a professional; someone who, in Korea, can be said as a person you can't not know, is very active in the entertainment business; Mr.XXX, music critic. Mr. XXX, how are you?
Sensei: Hello.

Host: Sensei is recognized as Korea's XXX (talks about who he is and how he's very famous etc, etc.) You seem to be very busy, usually you have at least 10 programs to record?
Sensei: Usually it's around 10, when it's busy, it can get to 13. (famous and busy, indeed.)

Host: 13! How does that schedule work?! Ah, so then, how does your path cross with Dong Bang Shin Ki? Is there anything special?

Sensei: First of all, Dong Bang Shin Ki appeared on stage in 2004 (it's 2003 !!) and after that, they have been acquiring many awards. I have been the award presentor twice for them. Also, last year in 2008, when Dong Bang Shin Ki's fourth ablum, MIROTIC, was banned for teens under the age of 18, I was part of that committee who made the decision.

Host: That topic was quite big.

Sensei: It was a very big topic. I was one of those who didn't agree with the ban. It was too harsh, and the standards for teens today is much different than it was years ago. The times have changed, and so because of this, I quit the committee. This is the relations I have with Dong Bang Shin Ki.

Host: MIROTIC were a hit in sales in both Japan and Korea. Having it be a hit must have its reasons, so let's move on the topics regarding Dong Bang Shin Ki, something that only sensei can tell us. Our first section; please view the VTR.

Voice: Asia's Star, Asia's first star, Dong Bang Shin Ki; from the day they appeared to the present time, let us take a journey back.

2004, first single, HUG. At that time, they were newcomers, but their stage presence and charisma were already at the top level. Already creating many talks for their first single, their second single, The Way You Are, coupled with wonderful voices and dances, became Asia's Star. With their first album, swept the awards at MKMF and appeared on stage as the star, Dong Bang Shin Ki.

2005, summer single, welcoming summer with the beach and the waves, continuing to steal woman's hearts; in the second album, Rising Sun, showed powerful performances and conquered the stage. Winter single, brought with them a warm image, warmed fan's hearts as the weather turned cold. Then at the 2005 award shows, accepted awards with their true, star identities. 2006, chosen as Korea's Soccer Team Representative, continued performances and held their first concert to return all the fan's love.

-Even when they’re on and off as Tohoshinki members, the two are always close together. Where do you think each other’s charm lies? To further inform our readers who only see the two on stage, please let us hear your thoughts
JJ: I think Yuchun’s good point is when his heart moves. Besides having that in common with him, I feel that we are the same. I’ve always felt that way since the first time I met him.
YC: I think Jaejung’s best point is that he is the type who listens to others well. His charm lies in both the way you can talk earnestly with him and how he understands your pain.
-Was the image of your first meeting memorable?
JJ: When I heard that Yuchun was coming back from America as an exchange student there to join Tohoshinki, I freely built up an image of him in my mind. He was totally different from my image of him: blonde hair, blue eyes, and white skin (laughs). He wore a colorful shirt, short pants, and sandals. He looked like a Chinese action star (laughs). But his mind was free-styled, and I was really glad. It just shows how you can’t judge a person from his appearance (laughs).
YC: At that time, Jaejung was into sports and he had these huge muscles. It was about twice the size of what he has now (laughs). When I first met him, he wore a tank top and shorts. I thought he was a K1 player. But after talking to him, I discovered that we had a lot in common and became really good friends.
-Is conversation important in seeing into men’s (hearts)?
JJ: Yes. We have differences in opinion too. We’re similar in the way how our emotions sway and we can talk with each other about anything- I think that’s the most important relationship of all.
YC: After a day’s work, while we go drinking, I’ll say, “I think this way, what do you think of it Jaejung?”. We do this quite often. Because we work with a lot of people, usually we have to read the overall atmosphere and be careful of what we say so that there are no misunderstandings. But during off-time, we can relax and say anything we want.
-So the important point is to not pay too much mind and speak frankly then. So how do you catch the other’s feelings and thoughts?
JJ: Yuchun discusses everything with me. That’s why I can completely understand that I can completely put my trust in him.
YC: During those times, I feel that I found happiness and I’m laughing with my whole heart. When we are together, I can put my full trust in him and talk to him about anything. We’re able to naturally understand each other.

Birth of a special project unit! Triggered by Yuchun
The pair’s project “Colors –Melody and Harmony” was born, whose idea was it?

YC: Mine. It was probably on the day just as we were recording “Endlessly Sweet- Amaku Hatehinaku”. I was originally preparing a solo for Tokyo Dome, but suddenly on that day, I thought, “Ah, I want to do it with Jejung.” I’ve worked with Jejung before in composing, and I thought that it would be perfect if we were partners this time. I asked, “Do you want to do it together?” He said “Yes, let’s do it.”
JJ: It was beautiful. At that time, I was worrying about what to do for my solo, and I thought it was a good idea. –So I decided to go with it at once.
YC: The two of us decided really quickly.
JJ: It was almost trivial (laughs). But we had our goal set.
-How did you want to make the song when you were discussing about it?
JJ: We’ve decided from the very beginning. Because we wanted to sing this song at the Tokyo Dome with all 50,000 people, we wanted to make a simple and bright melody. But, because Yuchun had already heard a song I arranged earlier, he suggested, “Let’s go with this one.” (laughs)
YC: Because it was a good song.
JJ: But it was troublesome.
YC: Not at all. I was troubled because I haven’t improved in composing, and it was a really good arrangement. It fit exactly the image of singing with 50,000 people. Because it’s his first bright song in all the songs he composed, I really wanted to use that arrangement.
-Really? The title Melody & Harmony is really beautiful. Because it was only the two of you, the song felt really fresh.
YC: We felt pressured about the harmony. We thought we couldn’t harmonize well with only the two of us singing.
-It’s already perfect, isn’t it?
JJ: I suppose it’s good. We worked really hard on it.

There are probably going to be some people who tell me that this trend has been around for a while with the majority of singers in Johnny's Entertainment and with the majority of males in Tokyo having a thin muscle body structure. But what they are talking more about skinny guys who look as though they have muscles because they are skinny, not the 'thin muscle' look. But to think that TVXQ is just one of the many hosomacho groups is a big mistake. This is because the popularity of Tohoshinki, as they call themselves in Japan, is so great and out of this world that it cannot be fully comprehended or understood in Korea.

If we divide the dominating Japanese male idol groups into three categories, the first would be 'role Lolita', groups comprised of pretty boys, the second would be 'Yankees', groups comprised of members who have a bad boy vibe to them, and the third would be the TVXQ style. The TVXQ style's popularity can be properly felt in Japan's host clubs. Koreans may connect the words host or hostess with adult clubs and see these words with a negative outlook, but to many young, handsome and popular college students in Japan, it is the most preferred part-time job.

Different from Korea's hosts, Japan's hosts serve only alcohol and there is a different term for those who provide sexual intercourse and they are called 'Urisen'. In these host clubs that can easily be found in Shinjuku's Gabukicho area, the pictures of the hosts in the clubs tell women what kind of style each host is. Before, most of the people in the pictures copied the style of Johnny's Entertainment's idol groups. But now, at least one or two hosts in every club very conspicuously copies the style of one of the members of TVXQ.

In this area, there was once a time where the most manly people were nabe (a girl dressed up as a guy or a trans gender female). with their thin, pretty bodies. But now many Japanese women are asking for the hosomacho style, men who are not only pretty, but are also manly, and who are not only skinny, but has muscles. The TVXQ wind is blowing through the clubs of Gabukicho.


Since many Korean idol groups are popular not only in Korea but all of Asia, many Koreans may think that TVXQ's popularity is similar to that of other celebrities. Shall we delve deeper to see just how popular TVXQ is in Japan? TVXQ's most recent Japanese single sold almost 200K copies in one week. This sets TVXQ with the second highest first week sales in their agency, Japan's biggest company Avex.

The only group above TVXQ is the 14-member group Exile, the group that received the highest award from the Japanese Record Association and the group that even creates big changes in society with their raging popularity. This means that TVXQ's first album sales beats that of the female leaders of Japanese pop, 'Amuro Namie'. 'Hamasaki Ayumi' and 'Koda Kumi'. This is a feat that not even popular star 'BoA' has achieved. These are the kind of top singers we can compare TVXQ to now.

But I am not basing their popularity on album sales only. TVXQ has set a huge record of being on Japan's representative music chart 'Oricon Chart' as 1st on weekly single sales six times already. Since the year 2000, the number of stars who have attempted to enter the Japanese market is enormous, with stars such as S.E.S, Sugar, Park Junghyun, Rain, Lee Soo Young, Se7en, SS501, Ryu Siwon, Park Yongha, Lee Byunghun, Yoonha, K, Sunmin, Big Bang and Super Junior.

But the only singers who have reached first on Oricon's weekly single charts are BoA (once) and TVXQ (six times). TVXQ also succeeded in being invited to hold two concerts in July at the Tokyo Dome which is considered the Dream Stage, even to Japanese singers. This has never been completed by any other Korean singer before.

But the Bible sends a message, "Prophets do not get respect from their homelands." For some odd reason, TVXQ's outstanding achievements do not seem to be reported or praised in Korea. Also, it is sad to see that TVXQ's success of almost selling 200K copies of their single was buried under the dispute between SM Entertainment and three members of TVXQ (Micky Yoochun, Xiah Junsu, YoungWoong Jaejoong) and the disbandment rumors that followed it.

They are not something something 'sama' (like Yonsama) who were washed ashore by the Hallyu Wave. No, they even asked all Japanese media agencies not to associate the word 'Hallyu' with them (even asking for news articles to be pulled down if the word was used in relation to them), to show that they wished to succeed with their own powers and were able to become widely known in Japan. TVXQ had to erase their nationality in order to gain the acceptance from the Japanese population.

The rumors of disbandment at the height of their popularity has become a hot topic of conversation in the Japanese music industry. Japanese media has been created a daily special to update everyone about what's happening in Korea with regards to TVXQ, and this has caused Avex's CEO to come forward and give an explanatory statement to clam the Japanese fans. He announced that TVXQ's Japanese activitees would continue regardless of what was happening in Korea and he decided to announce this himself. This has never happened before.

It seems as though the way Korean agencies set the income division when writing up the contract has surprised the people of Japan who are used to the Japanese agencies' way of working that gives monthly salaries that may change. Since the first official event TVXQ held after the disbandment rumors came out was in Japan and not Korea, the source of such rumors, with the Fireworks Festival Concert, the Japanese media was more vigilant when it came to reporting the issue than the Korean media.

Therefore, whether they wanted this or not, this case has opened TVXQ up to a wider fan base including the younger generation. YoungWoong Jaejoong, who is the most popular amongst the members in Japan, was even seen in a paparazzi scandal magazine that only extremely famous Japanese celebrities appear in.

Although the situation in Korea is a complete mess, TVXQ might be able to take one step further in their Japanese activities through this happening. But they must once more grab hold of their Korean fans. There are already rumors that the 'light fanbase' is ready to embrace the new 6 member male idol group SM Entertainment is preparing.

As faithful as Korean fans are, they are also able to turn their backs on a singer very quickly. If even the fans who used to embrace them turn their backs on TVXQ, the group will become the prophets who are not respected in their homelands.
